THE HOLIDAY.
The King’s Birthday was observed in Foxton yesterday. The special and ordinary trains brought down hundreds of people from Palmerston, some to attend the local Athletic Sports, but the majority wended their way to the beach and along the river banks, where they boiled the billy and spent a happy time—until the rain descended. The morning broke dull and some heavy showers fell, but the sky subsequent!}’’ cleared and gave promise of a fine day. Clouds began to bank up after noon, and, about 2 o’clock, large drops of rain preceded the heaviest downpour of rain we have experienced for some time. It simply poured down. Picnickers and pleasure seekers, dressed in summer attire, sought convenient shelter, but the majority were “drenched to the skin.” A stampede was made from the Park, and the picture presented by the fair sex, as they ran or walked through the torrential downpour was a sight for the gods. Dresses and hats of many colours, were made sport of by Jupiter Pluvius, the colours from the ribbons, etc., ran on to the white. Sun shades were requisitioned to save feathers and bright roses, but it was useless. Staid mothers, accompanied by their little ones, were cutting out quick time in short sprints. The young ladies who looked “so nice” as as they stepped from the trains in the morning, were sorry figures as they entrained homewards in the evening.
