THURSDAY’S POLL.
We remind ratepayers in the borough that a poll will be taken on Thursday next between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., for the purpose of deciding whether rating on the unimproved value will be adopted in the borough in place of the existing system. Ratepayers have had ample time and opportunity of coming to a wise decision on the subject. It only now remains for them to record their votes and settle the matter for three years at least. It is not necessary for us to reiterate the previous arguments in favour of rating on the unimproved value. We have met comparatively few individuals who have expressed themselves against the new system, and even these do not appear to thoroughly understand the principle. The point is this : The land only will be taxed, according to its value ; improvements such as buildings, fences, out houses, etc., are exempt. The man that it “ hits-up ” is the speculator, whose property is yearly improved at the expense of the bona fide and go-ahead citizen. We hope, however, that those in favour of the proposal will generate sufficient energy to record their votes. One opponent by disseminating distorted statements, ma} r whip up sufficient voters to defeat the carrying of the poll unless the supporters are active. We hope, in the best interests of the borough, that the poll will be carried.
