ATHLETIC NOTES.
[By Observer.] I notice the local peds. and cyclists are pegging away putting on the finishing touches for the nth of. November. One of those who has caught my eye is W. Shultz a persevering bike rider! who has trained consistently, aiuF ought to pick up something on the day. I rather fancy him for the longer distances, as he is a stayer. Fred . Collins is rather a dark horse for this year’s local bike race. I do not see him on the track but perhaps he trains in the dark. I have also noticed A. Walden, Currie and J. Hennessy on the track training candidates' for the youth’s race. Hennessy and Currie are promising colts. I hear our genial Constable D. Dickson is going to try conclusions with the local cracks in the local one mile'.
Of the devotees of the spiked shoe I have seen E«o. Alzdorf, B. Meadows, D. Hickson, Sheilds and Furrie on the training track. Alzdorf is a vastly improved man from last year and will run from a looj-ds up to a % mile. He has i greatly improved his style of gat- A ting off the mark and should take “ a lot of settling on the iitK Meadows is an unknown quantity to Foxtohites. He' does not give one the idea that he is'a novice judging by the way he goes about his work there is a suggestion of latent speed about the big fallow which I fancy will trouble a few in the days to come. Shields is doing short breaks and does not seem to be getting off the mark too cleanly. • • Furrie is rather a dark horse. I aiet him coming in from Motuiti tie other morning about 6 a.m.. sc he is not idle. Other dark horses are Joe Jillet, winner of last year’s Football Cup, Pony Savife, Sid Wright, and Dave Dicksm.
Theie is a little story told by a pair o' lovers who went to the \ Park tc enjoy each other’s society. They .Vere very much engrossed with eich other, when suddenly a Sound like that of a galloping draught horse fell upon their ears and tley were considerably startled. On recovering from their alarm, they :aw a white clad appartion rushiig down the sprint track like a ch.-rger, and at the finishing point another figure holding something like small dinner plate which it was consulting very intently. “ What does she tell, Dick,” said the thing in white; “16 seconds, Joe “my word,” says Jos ‘‘ another 6 seconds off that and we will go to Fielding!”
