C.‘ Benson’s book “ Letters of Queen Victoria,” just published, throws, as The reviews declare, some light on memorable historical incidents. Among other things it is shown that the Queen, at the instance of Lord Palmerston (then Premier), in 1861 remonstrated with The Times for con-
stahtly attacking everything Prussian, including the claim to Divine 1 right, and that Mr Delane promised f to give the Prussians respite from that most cruel of all inflictions — good advice. The plan of campaign of the Shipping Federation’s meeting now being held in London to discuss plans for mutual protection and assistance against unionism, is being Fpnf QPCfCt. The appeal of Dr Karl Hau against the sentence of death passed upon him has been rejected and the sentence confirmed. [On the evening of November 6th, 1906, Frau Molitor, while walking in the street in Baden with her daughter Olga, was shot by a man who had followed her for some distance. The man then ran away. Dr Hau, an American, son-in-law of Frau Molitor, was sentenced to death in August last after a sensational trial. Olga Molitor in her evidence stated that Han’s wife was unreasonably jealous, but otherwise the family re<lations were amicable, although Hau indulged in very extravagant habits and was frequently furnished with large sums of money by his mother-in-law. While Hau was awaiting trial his wife committed suicide. J Madrid, October 16. Through a flood in a part of the province of Barcelona, a train disaster has to be reported. A Bridge between Berga and Mauresa, both small towns, was washed away, and a train was precipitated into the river. Eleven persons were drowned. Sydney, October 17. The cable steamer Patrol is engaged making slight repairs to the New Zealand cable off Botany Bay. Ottawa,' October 17. Earl Grey, Governor-General, speaking at Port Hope, in Ontario, said that now the people of. the United Kingdom were bearing the chief burden of Empire. The time was coming however, when Canada, owing to her territorial size and capability of carrying a large population and exerting great moral influence, would be able to / take a paramount share in control--4 ling the greatest Empire ever / known.
