The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1907.
Certain rumours have been going the rounds to the effect that Mr John Stevens, member for this electorate, would not seek re-elec-tion. Our representative waited on Mr Stevens yesterday, and questioned him on the point. Mr Stevens very emphatically declared that he had no intention of standing down. “ If, ” said the veteran, “a representative deputation of electors waited upon me and proved that I had not done my duty by ray constituents, and asked me to retire, I might consider it, but not otherwise. ’ ’ This statement should have effect of settling the rumour. The electors can take it for granted that Mr John Stevens, who has represented the Liberal Party in this electorate for a- quarter of a century, still retains the utmost cofidence of the Ministry and a majority of the Liberals in the Manawatu. The five or six other talked-of candidates who are anxious to annex the honour, will have a very hard row to hoe to "unseat the present member. At the proper time, the electors will be given an opportunity of judging whether Mr Stevens has betrayed the trust so long reposed in him.
