Lvtteeton, October 13. Michael Henry, a watchman on the Harbour Board dredge Manchester, at Lyttelton, was found floating under the wharf about 5 a.m. to-day. It is supposed he missed his footing and fell in the water while stepping from the wharf to the vessel. Deceased was about 58 years of age, and a native of Cornford, Ireland. He was an exceptionally quiet, steady man, and had been emploj r ed on the dredge for the past seven j T ears. SUDDEN DEATH. Auckland, October 13. Edward Roberts, aged about 40 years, was picked up by the police in Lower Queen Street on Saturday morning, and. as he appeared to be seriously ill, a constable conveyed him to the District Hospital, where he died half an hour after admission. A certificate from Dr Hooper was found in Robert’s possession, stating that he was suffering from heart disease. Dunedin, October 14. Charles McVeigh was fined 40s and costs for permitting drunkenness on the licensed premises of the Southern Hotel. No endorsement of the license was made. Auckland, October 14, A sharp earthquake was felt at Whakatane at 7.35 last night. The direction was south-west to north-east. Nelson, October 12. The weather continues wintry, with tropical rain, snow, hail and sleet, and thunder. During the thunderstorm a bull at Takaka, owned by Mr James Page, was struck by lightning. It was running loose, and was found dead, having lain clown by a wire fence which was splintered by lighting, the wires touching the carcase.
