The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY. OCTOBER 8, 1907. THURSDAY NIGHT’S ADDRESS.

We hope that every ratepa}'er who can make it convenient will attend at the Masonic Hall next Thursday evening to listen to the address to be delivered by Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., on the subject of rating on the unimproved value of land. Mr Hogg is recognised throughout the Dominion as one of the ablest exponents of this system of rating, and it is on these grounds that he has been asked to deliver an address at Foxtou so that ratepayers may be helped to a wise decision when asked to record their votes on the subject. It has been pointed out time and again in these columns, and it is also the opinion of a large number of onr citizens, that it would be greatly to the advantage of the borough to adopt rating on the unimproved value. Those who have opposed it in the past are particularly requested to attend the meeting and to state their reasons for such objection. The address should be of great educational value, and those responsible for the meeting deserve great praise for obtaining the services ot such an authority on the subject. Since the Act came into force 70 local governing bodies have*adopted the system, included among which may be mentioned : Christchurch, Wellington, Palmerston, Feilding, Masterton, Woodville, Grey Lynn, Greymonth, Hawera, Invercargill, Dower Hutt, Pahiatna, Stratford, Petone, Timaru, Westport, and many others, including some of the most important County Councils and Road Boards, The terms “unimproved value,” “capital value,” “improvements,” etc., will be explained to the meeting, and many other points of interest touching the incidence of land taxation. We hope that ratepayers will benefit by the meeting.
