The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1907 LIDDLE STREET-PRIVATE OR PUBLIC?
Some unrest is being caused by certain interested parties concerning a right-of-way at the end of Watson St., better known as the continuation of Liddle St. It appears that Mr Wilson purchased certain land in the vicinity subject to a right-of-way. This said right-of-way gives access to property owned by Mr J. A. Perreau. Mr Wilson fenced in the right-of-way. Mr Perreau removed a portion of the fence for the purpose of erecting a gate. On Saturday last the gate was removed and Mr Perreau offers a reward of £s for the conviction of the person who ‘‘ lifted ’’ it. Mr Wilson contends that what is known as Liddle St., from Clyde St to where he has fenced although used as a public thoroughfare is not so in reality as it is included in his purchase and be possesses the right under his deed of purchase to fence the whole of it off. Mr Perreau holds just the opposite view. He argues that the street or right-of-way was planned for the convenience of every owner whose property abuts on it. As the difference of opinion concerns a number of residents as well as the local authority, and as the price of land is yearly increasing in value, in our opinion a decision of the Supreme Court should be obtained to definitely set the whole matter at rest. We are informed that the land was originally held by the Rev. Mr Duncan who sold the same to Mr Liddle. The latter in due course quitted allotments to others. As delays are dangerous, much expense raav be saved if the dispute is settled at once. The Council, being an interested party, should at least ascertain their position in respect to this thoroughfare.
