FATAL ACCIDENT.
A Cart Capsizes. Driver’s Neck Broken. A fatal accident occurred at Mr F. Easton’s homestead, Moutoa, yesterday forenoon, when a man named Charles Bovvers had his neck broken through the capsizing of a cart. It appears that Bowers (who was also known as Hussey, the name of his stepfather), who is an employee of Mr Easton, was engaged at the time of the accident in driving a three horse team with a load of willows. He was accompanied by a man named de Ridder.' The horses left the track, and it was while endeavouring to bring them back that one wheel entered a dip,-the sudden turning of the horses did the rest, and the cart overturned, the unfortunate driver being pinned beneath it. De Ridder, who was also on the cart seated with his back to the driver, jumped clear. He immediately endeavoured to release his companion, but could not manage single - handed. Assistance was quickly obtained, but Bowers was dead. De Ridder heard him groan, but death must have been almost instantaneous, -Jhe neck being broken 7 Dr Mandl and Constable Woods were communicated with, and proceeded to the locality. Bowers was a married man, and with his wife and two children, aged respectively xi and 4 years, occupied a cottage on Mr Easton’s property. Bowers arrived from Christchurch about two months ago, and is a comparative stranger in this district. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved ones. An inquest will be held at 10 a.m. to-morrow.
