HOCKEY.

The Foxton team, which was defeated by Manawatu at Palmerston on Saturday, says the Manawatu Standard, contains several

players. Rough, a 4 wing man, is much above the ( average, and should develop into a first-class player. Shadbolt is another player who stood out prominently. Tucker, of Palmerston, who played in goal for the visitors, who were a man short, gave a capital exhibition, stopping some hot shots. The team was captained by Fred Woods, one of the founders of hockey in Palmerston, where he played for the old Alhambras, a pioneer team here. It is mainly due to his enthusiasm that the game has been established

in Foxton, but he has the assistance of some good sports. Next year it is hoped to form either an Association affiliated to the N.Z. Association, or a sub-Association to Manawatu in Foxton. The feature of Manawatu’s team on Saturday was the fine play of the younger members, and this augurs well for the future of hockey in Manawatu, < Manawatu intend playing a return match at Foxton next Saturday or the Saturday following. Manawatu suggested Dominion Day as a suitable occasion for the annual fixture with Wellington, and the arrangement was agreed to. Now, however, as no holiday has been declared in Palmerston, the match will have to be declared off.

" “Bulger” in the Post says:— The Canterbury and Wellington draw makes it almost certain that the New Zealand cup will this year make its way to Auckland. Auckland has played as many representative matches as any other province, and won every one. Neither Wellington nor Canterburj r has suffered defeat, but the former has played three drawn games and the latter two. Canterbury has not played a sufficient number or matches to gain the cup. Manawatu has had four wins,

four losses and a draw this year. lAs showing the popularity of hockey, it might be mentioned that no less than 40 senior representative games have been played in New Zealand this year. In additions to these many ladies’ teams have met.
