HEALTH OF SCHOOL CHILDREN.
Auckland, September 18. Dr Max Hertz, reporting to the Board of Education on the recent medical examination of school children, stated that the quantity of rickets in New Zealand was 1.3 per cent, as against 18 per cent, in Europe. Lateral curva - ture of the spine appeared in 7 per cent, of cases, as against 25 to 30 per cent, on the Continent. The cases of scobasis seen here were of a much less pronounced character than the European. The rarity of these complaints he attributed to the inherited good disposition and wholesome way of living and eating. He is afraid the author ities can claim little credit for it. On the contrary, the authorities had in some respects done that which tended to aggravate the conditions. Dr Hertz commented on the bad way in which New Zealand boys and girls carry themselves. He says physical training was amazingly neglected, especially as the sitting accommodation in the schools is not. at all what science asks.
