SPORTING.

By Probable.,-;-Though the weather broke up fine on each morning of the faces at Eevin, the Horowhenua Racing Club meeting was concluded each day in heavy rain, which completely spoilt the pleasure of racing. Nevertheless, totalisator receipts showed a considerable increase on the previous gathering of March last.

The N.Z. Cup candidate, Mahuta, who failed in the final bit of the six furlongs first day, easily disposed of a fair field of performers second day over seven furlongs. Evidently, the Mahaki colt wanted a good sound gallop, and by cup time should be spick and span, as he has wintered well. Alf. Wright had the local mare, Lady Disdain, in good fettle, and after being in the lead most of the way in the Welter first day, punters would have nothing else on Thursday, when she downed a field of over six furlongs in a common fashion, aud paid £2 6s. Toatuhi was prominent for a while in the six furlongs on Wednesday, and appeared short of work, as he died out of the contest the last furlong. Andrew Eaing’s Glengowrie, under Tilley’s tuition, was looking remarkably well, and raced exceedingly so, considering it was his first race. Unfortunately for his owner, he went slightly amiss after the event, in consequence of which he could not start second day. The big race first day was a great finish, about six horses finishing within a length and ahalf of each other. Hiras’ win was not out of turn, though his connections participated little in the £3O odd dividend. Rendrock showed improved form in the Moutere Hack, - when he downed good favourites in William and Belario. The son of Explosion may go on winning. As predicted, Geo. Payne was not long getting some of the purchase money back from Idealist, for that nag won first start at Ashburton, and paid over £3. Bulls anticipations will appear on Tuesday. Montigo returned to Foxton last night, and will be spelled.
