DISTRESSING FATAL ACCIDENT.

New Plymouth, September 10. Mr A. A. Pikett, a New Plymouth borough councillor, was seriously injured this morning at the Council’s stone-crushing plant at Waiwaikaiho. Some defect occurred in the working, and Mr Pikett was assisting the men to remedy it. While kneeling down * attempting to fix a chain on a pulley, he slipped, and his face was struck by the fly-wheel. The litter had been broken and was strapped together with iron straps. These’straps struck his . face, rendering him unconscious, in which condition he fell across the chain. The other men immediately rushed to his assistance and stopped the machinery, but not until the flywheel had made several revolutions, aggravating the already serious injuries he had received. Mr Pikett was removed to the Hospital. Later. Mr A. A. Pikett, who was injured by the stone-crusher, died in the hospital. Deceased was 37 years of age and leaves a widow and five children, one of five weeks old. He was a well-khown contractor of the firm of Pikett and Wilkie and had recently completed the new block of GovernJient buildings. Deceased was a ood citizen and recently entered üblic life in which he showed great energy and enterprise.
