SUNDAY BOOZING.
A Sensational Melee. Sydney, September 8. A sensational affair is reported from Rydalmere. The local constable suspecting, it is alleged, that sly Sunday drinking was being carried on, entered a building situated in the grounds of the Catholic church and surprised a number of men. A melee ensued, during which a revolver taken from the constable went off, the bullet striking a local publican in the region of the heart. His condition his serious. The constable received a rough handling. He was removed to the hospital and several stitches were required to a wound in the head. Three arrests have been made. Sydney, Yesterday. The Constable surprised the men in the sacristy attached to Rydalmere Catholic Church Hall. In the course of a struggle the hall, altar and church furnishings were splattered with blood from the wounded men. The publican’s injuries are not so serious as was anticipated, there being only a flesh wound.
