The contractors are making good progress with the borough concrete kerbing. The contractors are making the local Court House look quite presentable with its new coat of colored paint.

The s.s. Himatangi brought into port yesterday morning, a small deck cargo of bine cod, caught off Stephens’ Island. Mr A. Jon son had the misfortune to fall on his way home on Thursday evening, receiving a severe shaking.

The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council will be held on Monday night. Cr Austin has signified his intention of resigning his seat on the Borough Council. The services in the Presbyterian Church to-morrow will be conducted in the morning by the Rev. G. K. Aitken, and in the evening by Mr Billens, of Palmerston N. The person who took an oilskin from M. Peireau’s stables on Wednesday afternoon is warned to return same to prevent further trouble. The services in the Methodist Church to-morrow will be conducted by the Rev. J. Southern. The subjects for the day will be : Morning, “A Confession of Faith”; evening, “Rife in the place of death.” The choir will render the anthem “I was glad.”

At the meeting of the Manawatu Licensing Bench, held at Marton on Thursday, all licenses throughout the district were renewed. The recommendations suggested by the police and health officer had been carried out by licensees: A social will be given in the Masonic Hall on Wednesday night, by the ladies of the Methodist Church. Refreshments will be provided. A good programme will be given by the ladies. Games and competitions will be indulged in. The social will commence at 8 p.m. Tickets is each.

In all likelihood, Miss Cameron and Mr Blundell (dentist) of Palmerston, will provide items at the football concert on September 25th, while amongst others the following will contribute towards the evening’s entertainment: Misses Webb, Crighton, Cargill, Messrs Jeffries, Pickering, Fowler, Hooker, Lenihan, Shadbolt, Crichton, Heagerty, and Sutherland.

Woodville reports that a case of shocking cruelty to animals will come before the court. This week 131 cattle were put into four trucks at Mangatera and when they reached Woodville 12 were dead and 15 down and dying. The police ordered the removal of the cattle and they were placed in a paddock pending investigation. The authorities say that two more trucks were necessary.

Twenty-seven days had elapsed up to Tuesday last since a female resident of Wanganui had tasted food. The woman, who is a well - known resident of the town, says the “ Herald,” has undertaken her self - imposed fast in the hope that her health, which has been impaired, will be restored. During the twentyseven da\’s she has subsisted solely on lemon drink. She carries out her household duties, and, in addition, takes a little exercise by digging in the garden. Her health, she declares, has already benefited considerably, and she is confident that at the end of her forty days’ fast —the time she has stipulated—she will be perfectly restored.

It is probable that the Wellington Tramways Committee of the City Council will bring in an unanimous report advising the Council not to entertain Mr A. Hall’s offer to lease the tramways, says the Times. Those who do not regard the tramways as a very remunerative concern are generally opposed to private enterprise in matters of this kind, and would not care to see the city retrace the steps it has taken towards municipalisation. Tittle Tommy had a couple of bantam hens, which disappointed the family by laying only very small eggs. The boy pondered over the matter, with the result that his father discovered an ostrich egg had been taken by Tommy from under a glass case in the drawingroom and had been placed in the fowlhouse. In Tommy’s handwriting a slip of paper near the ostrich egg adjured the bantams to ‘‘keep your eye on this egg, and do your best! ” The loyalty of the Scotsman to his church a generation ago was illustrated by the Rev. Dr Gibb at St. John’s Church, Wellington, when referring to the late Mr Alexander Hopkirk. ' According to the reverend gentlemen, deceased in the vigour of his youth, used to swim the River Tweed in order to attend the weekly prayer meeting. The river was bridged, but their was a toll which deceased at that time could ill-afford to pay. Rather than miss the service, he took the only alternative, and swam.

On Thursday, 19th September, there will be an organ recital in All Saints’ Church. The organist will be Mr Milward Anderson, assistant organist at St. Peter’s Parish Church, Wellington. Mr Anderson has had a great deal of experience on the large city organ, and his recital should be looked forward to with interest. The musical world in Foxton should turn out eu masse on this occasion, for their musical talents will have an opportunity of hearing some of the finest sacred music. From the Church Chronicle we learn that “There is still £lO owing on All Saints’ organ, and it is hoped this will soon he paid off. In September Mr M. Anderson is coming to Foxton to give an organ recital in the church. The collection will go to reducing the outstanding debt. Our thanks are due to a number of ladies who, under the management of Mesdaraes Clemett and Barber, see that the church is cleaned each week. This is indeed a noble work, and one that deserves great praise. ' There has been a great deal of sickness in the Parish during the last month, and especially among the children."

To-day is the thirty-ninth anniversary of the action in the bush at Te Ngntn-o-te-Manu, in which Major von Tempsky, the gallant Prussian who commanded the Forest Rangers, Captains Buck and Palmer, Lieutenants Hunter and Hastings and fourteen men were killed.

Jersey cows are becoming more popular every season. One dairyman we have heard of, says the Hawke’s Bay Herald, w'ho would have nothing to do with them, happened to get one or two by mistake. He is now so surprised at the remarkable results that he has decided to have nothing else. Another breeder finds that by the introduction of the Jersey strain his young heifers are giving 6ylb more butter fat.

William Patrick Harrington, employed as salesman at the Mutual Stores Drapery Co., Dunedin, was committed for trial yesterday on a charge of the theft of goods valued at ,£i6o. The thefts are alleged to have taken place in small parcels at various periods between December, 1906, and August, 1907. Ladies silk blouses, underclothing, children’s clothing, men’s socks, singlets, and some glassware are included in the goods claimed more or less definitely as belonging to the company. Accused who is 26 years of age, was admitted to bail in his own recognisance of and two sureties of each.
