A discussion took place respecting the club property. The following Committee, Messrs Fraser, Clemett, Hornblow, MacDonald, and Phillips, were appointed to make enquiry and arrange loan in order to pay off the balance owing on ground, some and deben-ture-holders ,£25. The question of raising the annual subscription was brought up.
The Chairman said it had been mooted that the men’s subs, should be raised from 12s 6d to 15s, and to elect hon. members at a lower figure.
Mr Clemett was opposed to any increase at present. Mr Hornblow said the raising of the subscription may be the means of excluding many young men whom the club should attract. They wanted to guard against exclusiveness. He would oppose at present any increase. Mr MacDonald said other club’s charged a guinea, but they had three or four courts and better appointments. He was opposed to any increase.
Mr Phillips was also opposed to an increase.
A resolution was then put and carried unanimously, That the subscriptions remain the same as last year.
Defaulting members were criticised. It was resolved, That Mrs O. Austin and Messrs Morgan and Fraser be a committee to assist the Secretary in collecting fees. It was also resolved that a list of defaulters be posted on the notice board of the pavilion. Votes of thanks concluded the meeting. A club member was advocating economy on the score o£ entertaining visitors rather than raising the fees, and alluded to the expenditure showed on the balance-sheet in this respect. A lady member, while endorsing the remarks, mentioned that while a visiting team was being entertained at lunch a local player’s shoes were made the receptacle for pudding. That joke could only have been perpetrated by a puddin’ ’eaded “ blubber.”
