A WORD TO MOTHERS.
Speaking on infant life protection in the Upper Chamber last Tuesday, the Hon. Dr Collins made some wise observations which every mother should read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest. Our children are the Slate’s greatest asset. Many women, however, don’t think so. Bearing and caring for children is now looked upon by the so-called society dame as vulgar—it mars their little afternoon scandal parlies, etc. It used to he considered one of the highest honours conferred upon the sex by the Creator. But we are getting demoralised. To return to Dr Collins, he said "he wished to draw attention to the necessity of mothers taking proper care before the birth of their offspring ; and he also desired to emphasise the paramount importance of the natural feeding. When the child was born the natural tood was still what came from the mother’s breast; and there were not more than 10 per cent of mothers who were physically able lo discharge this natural duty. In these days, when athleticism; among women was fairly general, it- might be that yo.ung women and mothers went in too much for athletic exertion.”
