MAN AND DOG FIGHT.
Terrific Struggle with a Terrier.
A terrible encounter between a man and a dog was described in the Southend county court (England), . when Joseph Pudney, a mailman, living at Rayleigh, Essex, brought an action for dam ages against Harry Turner, a machinist. Late one night Pudney was passing Turner’s house, when a powerful Irish terrior flew at him, making four bites in one thigh and two in the other. Pudney seized the dog by the jaw and tail and threw it over the hedge. The animal, however, flew at him again, biting him severely in the hands and arms. He shouted for assistance, and a boy brought him a lantern and a stick. Weak and bleeding Pudney walked backward for 300 yards, keeping the dog at bay as well as he could. When the encounter ended—man and dog both thoroughly exhausted — it was found that Pudney's clothes had been practically torn off him, and he had received between twenty-five and thirty bites, fourteen of which were very serious. Defendant’s explanation was that he kept the dog to protect his aged and infirm parents. Pudney was awarded £2O damages.
