THE POLITICAL MICROBE.
We believe that since the present Ministry has come into power there has been a marked falling off from the ranks of the political microbes. Every village throughput the country not long since had its microbes and informers—men who openly boasted of the fact that a forty-second cousin was champion hanger - on or committee organiser to a certain minister or member ; that the shivering postmaster, or constable, or stationmaster, had better be careful, or the crawlsome creature would put a nail in bis coffin. The sword of Damoeles hung over the head of many an unfortunate civil servant. With the recent change, however, and judging by the remarks that have fallen from the Premier from time to time, we have reason to believe that the fnana of these creatures or wire-pullers is on the wane. Every Ministry . has its microbes, and the longer a Ministry remains |in power, the
more numerous do these undesir-
ables become. The general election is an excellent niicrobe-hatching season. We hope, therefore, that the electors of'Manawatu will keep in touch with the leading political questions of the day, in order that when the candidates announce themselves in the near future, voters will be fully qualified to judge for themselves without following the dictates and threats of the political microbe.
