HOCKEY.
The tournament arranged by the Foxton Hockey Association took place in Mr Symons’ paddock yesterday afternoon in ideal weather and was witnessed by about 300 spectators. Moutoa entered three men’s teams and two ladies teams, including one entirely made up of natives. Foxton entered three men’s teams and one ladles team. Considering that this is the first year. that hockey has been played in the district, yesterday’s exhibitions were a revelation to old players With more combination and a knowledge of the finer points, the local players will be able to break a lance with some of the best teams in the larger centres next season. The ladies play came in for very, favourable comment. Mr Drew, who has represented Manawatu in many a tough contest, was entrusted with the refereeing, and his decisions met with universal satisfaction. Mr Jeffery officiated as time-keeper, and Messrs Whitlow and Frew as line-umpires. In the first bout Moutoa B (Messrs Bowe (2), Smith, Downes, and Peni) played Albions (Messrs Wright, Fowler, Shields, Robinson, and Gray). Moutoa put up two goals to their opponents’ nil. Foxton ladies (Misses Cook, Spelman, McMillan, Adams, and Levett) then crossed sticks with Pukerua (Misses Puki, Puti, Watty, Walden and Roba). The local girls came off victorious by one goal to nil, after 'a very interesting game. Foxton (Messrs F. Woods, McGonagle, Rough (2), and Gordon) defeated Moutoa A (Messrs Bowe, Walden, Mokeky, Momoand Puti) by two goals to nil. Moutoa A defeated Awahou (Messrs Bright, Hickson, Gillespie, Bradley, and Ashmore) by two goals to nil. Moutoa ladies (Misses Howe, Smith, Bowe (2), and Walden) defeated the local girls by two goals to nil. In the men’s ’ final Foxton defeated Moutoa just on the call of time by a goal to nil, thus winning the •medals. In the ladies’ final, Foxton v. Moutoa, it was a drawn game at the call of time, and an extra five minutes’ play gave the Moutoas a well-deserved win by two goals to nil. A dinner was held in the evening at Mr Perreau’s rooms at which the sterner sex assembled. In the absence the President and Vice-President, Mr Hornblow occupied the chair. The following toasts were honoured: —“The King,” Chairman; “Foxton Hocke} 7 Association’’ —Chairman and Messrs Gordon and Bowe, “Winning team’’ Messrs Frew and Woods (capt) ; “ The Ladies ’’ Chairman and J. W. Rough; 1 ‘ Referee ’ ’ Messrs Hickson and Drew; “Runners up’’ Messrs McGonagle Smith and Walden ; “Press” Mr Woods and the Chairman ; “ Officials ” Messrs Jeffrey, Woods Frew, and Whitlow; “Hostand Hostess,” Chairman, and Mr Perrealt. Songs were contributed by Messrs Drew, Fowler, Woods, Chairman, and a hornpipe by Mr Walden. The medals were presented during the evening to the winning team, Messrs Woods (capt.), Rough (2), McGonagle. and Gordon. Mr Cargill officiated at the piano. The ladies medals were awarded at the concert in the Public Hall.
