Hamilton, August 25

About 10 o’clock last evening a fire broke out in a block of buildings in Victoria steeet owned by Hardley Bros., and occupied by Deacon (tobacconist), Purcell (tailor), Hardman and Curtis (pork butchers), and J. B. Scott (land agent). Before the flames were subdued all the shops were gutted and most of the contents destroyed nr ruined by smoke and water. Hardley Bros, had an insurance of on the buildings, but the tenants were all uninsured. Masterton, August 24. At the district Court to-day a youth named George William Hulley, a resident of Carterton, found guilty on a charge of procuring an instrument for an unlawful purpose, was admitted to probation tor one year, conditionally on paying ,£lO towards the costs of the prosecution.
