FOOTBALL.
The McEwen benefit match at Foxton on Saturday ended in a win for Albions by 16 points (two converted and two unconverted tries) to one try. The Allcomers side was composed of all classes of toe-ballers, “has-beens” and ‘ 1 never-will-be’s ’ ’ predominating. At all events, their display must have been amusing to the spectators —not so to the referee who threw up his contract in disgust at the finish. For the winners, Frankland, Chalk, Morao, Shields and others took the matter seriously while for the losers a local pul lican put in spasmodic flashes of brilliancy which caused great delight. The only score of the Allcomers was gained by a tired Union official, allegedly, when the arbitrator was not looking. Mr W. White held the whistle, controlling the novices as well as could be expected of any human being. The local football sports and concert will be held on W ednesday, September 25th, Seven-a-side tournaments, running with the ball, 220 yards, place and drop-kicking contests will make up the afternoon sport, while Palmerston and local talent will provide the concert programme in the evening, at which all trophies won will be presented. Tickets will be issued almost immediately.
