THE TRANSVAAL.
An Expression of Loyalty. Pretoria, August 17. General Botha, Premier of Transvaal, has given notice of a motion in the House of Assembly in favour of the colony acquiring the Cullination diamond for presentation to King Edward as a token of loyalty and to commemorate the granting reponsible government. The diamond belongs to the Premier Diamond Mining Company, and is estimated to be worth probably a million sterling. Under the mining laws the Transvaal Government is already owner of one-sixteenth of the diamond, the value of its share being fixed at Progressive members of the House are resolved to oppose the purchase, on the ground that the time is inopportune owing to financial difficulties and the existing depression in affairs on the Rand. Pretoria, August 16. The Field Cornets Bill has been passed by the House of Assembly. [The purposes of the Bill is to reintroduce the system of district administration by field-cornets, which was in operation in the days of the Republic.]
