FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening for the purpose of considering a reply from Mr Butcher re gas works site. Present.—His Worship the Mayor (B. G. Gower, Hsq.,) and Crs Hemiessy, Wilson, Gray, Baker, Hickson and Coley. The reply was to the effect that the area was 70ft. frontage by a depth to drain. The Clerk said that Mr Alzdorf had worked out the area, which was 37.7 perches. The Mayor ruled that Cr Coley, being an interested party, should not take part in the discussion. Cr Coley: I hope you will treat me fairly in my absence. The Mayor mentioned the area of the Palmerston North and other works.
Cr Wilson said an area of less than a quarter of an acre was out of reason. Cr Gray raised the question of residents in the vicinity of the proposed site taking exception to the works. Cr Hickson and others said the old objections re smoke, etc., were now overcome. Cr Hennessy put in a telegram received from Temnka re area on which works were erected in that town, which stated that the area on which the works were erected was one acre, one rood, five perches. After further desultory discussion the followinglresolution was carried unanimously Proposed by Cr Baker and seconded by Cr Hennessy, That Mr Butcher be informed that the Council cannot approve of a site less than half-an-acre. As far as the site is concerned, the situation is approved if of area named. The Clerk was instructed to order iron pipes for culvert crossings in Main Street. It was pointed out that residents were in favour of having this class of culvert put in when concrete kerbing was being done.
