MAKING YOUTHFUL CRIMINALS.
Since the Kelly Gang animated pictures made their appearance in this colony, toy vendors have been plying a roaring trade with the kiddies, in pistols and other harmless weapons. Up north these pictures inspired certain boys to emulate, on a small scale, the acts of the pictured desperadoes. The lads were punished for their folly. However, one cannot deny that this sensational class of entertainment is not conducive to the moral well-being of our children. We notice that at least one of our legislators, in the person of Mr Tanner, is of the same opinion as ourselves on this subject. He is reported to have said during the debate on the Prisons Estimate on Tuesday night, that “while we had such exhibitions as “ The Kelly Gang” going, about the country we were tending to make .criminals, and thought the time had arrived when some censorship should be exercised over theatrical representations of criminal doings.” We hope Parliament will move in the direction indicated by the member referred to at an early date.
