The Education Board has adopted a scheme for holding an examination of sixth standard pupils in the primary schools at Christmas, in addition to the ordinary promotion examination which takes, in this district, several months to get through. The idea is to bring pupils to centres in order to save time, and make “leaving ’’ certificates synchronise as far as possible. The ordinary examination is to be held as hitherto. The Land board has tacitly acknowledged the justice of the settlers’ claim to the right to reside off small sections near Ward township, Flaxbourne, pending the completion of the railway promised when the sections were taken up. A fireman on the Athenic named Patrick Cunningham was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with disobedience of an order to muster for boat drill on the voyage out. Defendant contended that boat drill was outside the work he had contracted to perform. Mr Riddell, S. M., said the order was a legitimate one, and the crew must become proficient in boat drill. Defenda'nt was fined 20s. The Government has decided to send a New Zealand team to compete in the Umpire Match at the National Rifle Association of New South Wales Prize meeting on Randwick Range, commencing on the 18th of October. Colonel Collins has been instructed to pick a team of ten or twelve of the best marksmen, whether volunteers or members of private rifle clubs. Masterton, August 14,
The Northern approach to Masterton has been for a longtime under discussion by the local bodies, and its very bad condition of late has shown the necessity for prompt and combined action. At yesterday’s meeting of the Masterton County Council it was mentioned that if the Council granted the Borough Council would also contribute towards the required work, and Government would grant a similar amount. Eventually a committee was set up to meet the Borough Council and consider the whole question. Dunedin, This Day.
The Trades and Labour Council has received a communication from the Minister of Mines requesting them to confer with the Coal Miners’ Union with a view to appointing a miners’ representative on" the Royal Commission to enquire into the Nightcaps Mine disaster.
Of nine applications received by the City Council for the position of electrical engineer, four were from New r Zealand and one each from Edinburgh, London, Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney. Oamaru, August 14.
In connection with the rain-pro-ducing experiments a special train to-day conveyed the explosives and artillerymen to Ngapara, which place will be utilised as a base ot supply. Gun-cotton is expected by the Corinna on Friday. Every haste is being made in order to make the best of the first favourable opportunity.
