UNDESIRABLES AT PALMERSTON.
\ There is an undesirable elemen "in Palmerston at the present time, against whom prompt measures by the police are necessary, says the Standard of yesterday. These individuals congregate at street corners and other favourable spots waiting far an opportunity to enter and rob residences, their operation being conducted in a matter which induces many householders to believe that they are respectable persons. Several complaints have been made lately regarding this undesirable element, thefts having been committed in various parts of the town. Their modus operand i is generally to appear to be searching for some person’s address, or occasionally they have some rubbish for sale. This gives them an opportunity of ascertaining when people are absent from their homes, and then thieving is an easy matter. In one case in Palmerston this week the occupiers of a residence were in the back portion of the premises when a couple of individuals entered the front door, and helped themselves to some valuable articles. Such barefaced robbries as these call for ythe utmost vigilance on the p'irt of the police.
