SPORTING NOTES.

By Probable. Racing at Pahiatua on Wednesday last was interesting, though the cattle engaged were only moderate. Perhaps the biggest moral that was ever saddled up succumbed in the open hack race, this being Greenleaf, who was defeated rather easily by Mrs Crawley, the latter starting at 7’s and B’s to one in a field of six. Four to one was the starting quotation of the favourite, and most of the books did not want any of that. However, two of the metallicians present went on with the chestnut, and reaped a small harvest thereby. Waitoa, who finished first past the post in the hurdle race, but who lost the stake through running round the hurdles, is a nag that should capture a hack hurdle event shortly. Waitoa won the Inst race of the gathering, a two mile event, rather easily. Narrow Escape showed some form in winning a double.

A nice cut of a fencer in King John, by Bay King, won a steeple event. He was ridden by Billy Naylor, one time with Jas. Prosser, and who rode The Guard to victory in the Canterbury National crosscountry event. Canterbury racing results will be posted outside our office during the week, being telegraphed by our special.
