THE GAS WORKS.

In conversation with our representative, Mr Butcher, who holds the right from the Council to light the town with coal gas, said his company had experienced much difficulty in securing a suitable site for the works, and he considered the figures asked for certain sections were very excessive. He added, however, that he hoped to submit a site for the Council’s approval on Monday. He .also informed our representative that a certain amount of local capital had been invested in the company, and finally, that the light would be installed for the coming winter. The appointment of a manager, who would assist with the construction of the works, laying of mains, etc., was also under consideration.
