MISCELLANEOUS.

With a merely elementary knowledge of the positions of the sun, moon, and stars at given times, and with a pocket campass (writes General Drayson, R.A., in the Captain;, it becomes almost an impossibility to get lost anywhere. The year 1906 (says the Revue des Duex Mondes) will be a notable year in the commercial annals of the entire world. Not only has the business of all countries enormously increased, but all industries have received orders on very remunerative conditions. Much uneasiness has been caused in Redruth, Cornwall, l:y another subsidence ot land, which has occurred in a yard dividing two business premises. The subsidence has disclosed a hole sixty feet in depth, supposed to be part of the workings of the once famous Penendrea mine.

At a recent meeting of the Association of Public Vaccinators in Condon, a protest was made against the provisions of the new vaccination, order, and it was declared that the proposed reduction of the minimum fees for domiciliary vaccination amounted to the sweating of medical men. Probably the coming summer will see the inauguration of an overland journey to Auckland which will be made in two days, thus competing with the combined steamer and train journey on more even terms than has hitherto been the case. It was suggested by Mr Massey to the Premier recently that when the advancing rail-heads of the Main Trunk come within twelve miles of each other —which ought to be the case next summer —the Public Works of the Railway Department should provide transport facilities over the gap, enabling passengers to make the journey between the two North Island cities in two days. Sir Joseph Ward informed the leader of the Opposition that as soon as the lines came close enough, the department intended doing what had been suggested, because as a business proposition, they wanted to get the through traffic at the earlliest possible moment. “ Wireless ” on a merchantman is now making a first appearance in New Zealand waters, says a Dunedin paper. The vessel is the Rippiugham Grange, which has been lying at the Victoria wharf for a day or two. The captain stales that on the voyage out he spoke Capetown through three hundred miles of tog, and also said “ Good day ” to the Deeuwin, although the steamer did not approach that point nearer than 450 miles. The installation which Houlder Bros, have fitted to this vessel is only an experimental one, but the meaning of the change is unmistakable.
