The excuses for drunkenness are many, some original, some well worn. One man, who appeared at the Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch, on a charge of having been found drunk on Saturday night, said that he was a member of a football team. ' “All the more reason for your sobriety,’’ returned Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., the presiding Magistrate. “We came into the town, your Worship,” replied the man, “and we went mad.” —Press. Asked by a Paris Herald interviewer how the Salvation Army work will go on after his death, General Booth replied “ My going will not affect the army. There will be some regret, I hope. But von know the cry: ‘ The King is dead; long live the King.’ My successor is already chosen. I have the right to appoint my successor, just as he will after me. Who will it be? No one knows but me. Not even the lawyers know. His name is sealed up in an envelope, and the lawyers know where to get it.
