MASSACRE IN MOROCCO.
Five European Workmen
Killed.

A German ship has brought to Tangier a large number of Jewish refugees from Casablanca, _ a Moroccan port on the Atlantic, 162 miles south-west ol Fez, and containing about 8500 inhabitants. The refugees declare that three local tribes, angered at the new control of the Customs and the progress of harbour and tramway , works, entered Casablanca uttering threats to massacre all Foreigners. One man, who claims to have been an eye-witness of the scenes, that the tribes entered and proclaimed .a holy war. Five Frenchmen, including a fireman and foreman named respectively Rata and Masse, employed on the harbour works, with two Italians and a Spaniard, were killed. The natives then pillaged European shops. The refugees escaped by bribing the soldiers who were guarding the harbour and town gates. Eater messages state that the massacre occurred at noon, the natives announcing that the3' were about to enter and massacre French workmen. They attacked the Frenchmen with clubs and knives. The corpses of victims were burned. It was 8 o’clock in the. evening before the fugitives were able to leave the town.
M. Neuville, French Consul, remained at his post. Dr Meuli, a Frenchman from Casablanca, has reached Tangier. He states that many natives entered the town on the pretext of selling corn, and assembled at the harbour, where they insulted and killed the native guards. Thereupon some armed European workmen appeared, but were instantty assailed and massacred. The captain of the German ship states that the outbreak was due to the Governor not taking precautions. Eondon, August 1. According to the “Tribune,” Fifty' armed Kabyle tribesman were the authors of the Massacre at Casablanca. The tramway workshops were destroyed, and many workmen were killed, their bodies being profaned and mutilated. TheKabyles then returned to their villages. Paris, August 1. The cruiser Galilee has proceeded to Casablanca. Eater. Despatches received by M. Pichon, Minister for Foreign Affairs, confirm the reports of the massacre at Casablanca, The French Government has taken measures to assist foreigners in case of need.
