SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

Sydney, August 1

Visitors to the river were treated to a good exhibition of rowing yesterday. Towns and Webb, leaving their pace-makers behind, got together after passing Uhrs Point, making a solid pace, and kept on terras till Henley was reached. When nearing the finish they put on a spurt and finished together off Searle’s monument. The Final Rows. A large crowd witnessed the final rows. Starting from Uhr’s point at 26 strokes to the minute, which soon fell to 24, Towns and Webb chased the pacers to One Man Whart, where Towns stopped. Webb went on to the end of the course, spurting at the finish. His performance was considered the best shown in public.

There has been an idea that the New Zealander had something up his sleeve for some time.

[A Press Association telegram received last night from Christchurch states that Welch, the wellknown Akaroa oarsman, intends to challenge the winner of the Towns v. Webb sculling race for the championship of the world.]
