Under Mr Mitchell’s will, in addition to bequeathing his library to the State, <£700,000 is left to endow it.

A special Gazette was issued today, expressing regret at the death ot one of the greatest benefactors in the State. [Mr David Scott Mitchell, who presented the Mitchell Library to the Government of New South Wales, was born at Sydney in 1836. He was educated at Sydney University (where he won the Barker Scholarship in 1853-4 L and became a barrister. He was patron of the New South Wales Historical Society, and a notable collector of coins, books, pictures, etc. Mr Mitchell was the possessor of one of the finest and most complete private libraries in Australia.]
