ORIGINAL POETRY.

A REVERIE. I sat alone ’neath Nature's autumn spell. And listened to the birds at eventide. Whose liquid notes in tuneful whispers fell On my sad heart and rested deified. They sang a hymn of praise, and lifted up Their tiny heads incensed with daily prayer, And by their adoration tilled my cup Of lonely sorrow with a heavier care. What magic spirit strung those living lyres I cannot tell—but in'those bell-like notes A message reached my soul and love-twin tires Lit up my heart-alight from myriad throats. I left the world and floated on the wing Of song to higher, fairer wtorlds than this. With naught to guide me save that voice to sing Me ever on mv way to lands of bliss. And as I soared the melody increased In sweeter tune refined by lofty space. And thus I longed to live, nor be released From’this consuming all-divining grace. So thus it lead me till a pearl-white gate Stayed now my flight and showed a wondrous For angels holding vials there did wait To bear the liquid music to the light. I saw them turn and rise in dazzling clouds. And fainter grew the singing of that hymn : I felt again the cold and hanging shrouds Of earthly sorrow—and my eyes drew dim. -g.y.w. Foxton, JuneT.lth, 1007.
