COLOSSAL FRAUDS.
American Jewellery Swindlds May Aggregate £400,000. The New York police are overwhelmed with complaints from jewellers and other firms regarding frauds perpetrated by the missing swindler, Kdward Boeck. It is now believed that Boeck secured at least ,£200,000 worth of jewellery, and some estimates place the amount at ,£400.000. The total is being added to almost hourly. Boeck was in the habit of pawning jewellery as soon as obtained. He would establish confidence by promptly redeeming and returning an article demanded by the owners. If the jewellery in question had been pawned for £"1000, Boeck would pawn another lot of jewellery for ,£2OOO. The police state that Boeck made his first money by selling valuable loot secured in Pekin at the time of the Boxer rising, which was entrusted to him by corrupt Chinese officials. Boeck retained the proceeds of the sales, knowing that the officials would not da re to complain.
