POTATOES.
Dunedin, July 19. Mr Moritzon, a large grain merchant, says that altering the potato duty from 20 per cent, to 20s per ton puts potatoes up to the extent of 12s per ton, and a corresponding rise in values may be expected in a few days. He suggests 2 per cent, up to the invoice price When that figure is. reached the duty to remain at £1 per ton. This would protect the grower when prices are low and would protect the consumer when prices are high.
