There is an agitation aloot to start a coursing club in Foxton. We understand a meeting will be called to discuss the question at an early date. Messrs Gardner and Whibley have been appointed agents in Foxton for the celebrated Gold Nugget teas. These teas are blended by an experienced expert and are guaranteed of excellent flavour and purity. The shortest day is 9 hours 12 mins, and the longest 14 hours 48 mins, the actual gain of da3'light in each month being; July 30 rains, August 1 hour, September 1 hour 16 mins, October 1 hour 18 mins, November 1 hour 8 mins, December 24 mins, a total increase of 5 hours 36 mins.
Inspector O’Brien, reported to Thursday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council that he attended the several cases of infectious, diseases in the County—tour of scarlet fever, one of enteric fever, and one of phthisis, or consumption. Improvements in the railway dwelling houses at Oroua Bridge were being effected, and health matters throughout the County were satisfactory. The Berlin carpenter who has been sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment for putting out his tongue at the Kaiser as His Majesty was driving past is a deep-dyed criminal compared with many of his fellow-victims of the law against lese-majeste, which is expounded is no fewer than 125 paragraphs in the German statute book. Not long ago an unfortunate private was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for saying to a comrade that the Kaiser might pay more attention to the salutes of his soldiers ; a Silesian schoolboy was prosecuted for smiling while His Majesty’s health was being drunk: and a governess, for signing her name in a hotel visitors’ book immediately below that of the king of Saxony ; while a German editor went to prison for three months for stating in his paper that the Kaiser received a day for signing a few documents. The law respects neither age, sex nor nationality. A Dresden lady of 74 was sent to gaol for six months for an unflattering reference to the Saxon King; about the same time a boy of 14 received a similar sentence for speaking disrespectfully of the Kaiser ; and for the same offence two American ladies were arrested and expelled from Germany,
Meeting of the Committee of the local Racing Club this evening at 8 o’clock.
A special meeting of the Borough Council will be held on Monday evening next, at 7 30 o’clock, to receive and consider the report of of the Works’ Committee, and to discuss sanitary matters. Madame Gueria has been sentenced to three years’ internment in a French colony in connection with the attempt to murder Dr Herbert in Paris last year.
The new organ for the Presbyterian Church arrived yesterday, and opened up to the satisfaction of all concerned. In all probability the instrument will be used in conjunction with the services next Sunday. The County Council overseer’s estimate for stop bank near Shannon Ferry is as follows: —85 yards to chain at qd : £3 3s 9d per chain. Total Average depth of bank 4.91. The Council accepted the tender of C. Petersen, at ,£lO4, for the work. Work is plentiful in Foxton at present, and it is difficult to obtain men to undertake it. Most of the flaxmill employees take things easy at this time of the year until the mills commence to shreik again. As an evidence of the scarcity of labour, Mr Austin recently called tenders for grubbing about 22 acres of toi toi close to his mill, but not a single tender was received. In other centres a job of this nature would be simply rushed.
At a meeting ot the directors of the Foxton Co-operative Building Society held on Tuesday afternoon, a vote of appreciation and thanks was passed to the Herald for assisting to promote the society. We appreciate the resolution and hope the society will prosper, and with such levelheaded business men at its head, there is no season why it should not. It is an institution that should be welcomed and supported in every community.
The Devin Dramatic Company, who are establishing themselves as warm favourites with Foxton playgoers, staged the farcical comedy, ” Confusion,” in the Public Hall last night, and, despite the recent run of amusements, the Hall was fairly well filled. The piece was well staged, and the various characters were sustained admirably by members of the company. The acting of Mr J. R. Goodall (Mortimer Mumbleford) and Mrs Goodall (Rose, his wife), Misses Gibson and Hayes (Miss Tickleby and Maria), and Mr C. G. Banks (James) was particularly good ; all the other parts were equally well sustained, and the different dresses of the ladies of the company were worthy of comment. The music supplied by Messrs Kearsley (piano) and, Hayfield (violin) was much appreciated by the audience. The announcement by Mr Goodall, at the close of the entertainment, that the company would re-visit Foxton at an early date, with an entirely new piece, was well received.
