EXPLOSION ON A BATTLESHIP.
Petal Results. New York, July 16. An explosion of powder aboard the . United States battleship Georgia during target practice off Province Town, Massachusetts, killed five and injured 12, including three officers* New York, July 16. Details of the Georgia explosion shows that while a charge of 200 rounds was being lifted from the hoist, two seamen noticed the cover smouldering. They shouted a warning and threw 7 themselves flat. A terrific burst of flame followed, and the turret w 7 as filled w 7 ith smoke and noxious gases. A number tried to escape through the hatchw 7 ay. Some gained the deck and jumped into the sea. The chaplain was the first to enter the turret. Two more deaths are reported and six are in a precarious condition. It is suspected that a spark from the Georgia’s funnel ignited the powder. The concussion and fire injured all who w 7 ere in the turret.
