THE DEAD LETTER OFFICE.
The following were among the articles of value found in letters opened in the Dead Letter Office last year, and returned to senders, where practicable : —Post - office orders, number 598, amount bank drafts, 48, ; cheques, 467, dividend warrants, 46, ; promissory notes 5,. 186. There were also many postal notes, stamps, and bank notes, in addition to gold, silver, and copper. The collection made by the department embraces practically everything from gold and silver watches to tie pins, studs, and artificial teeth. Some of the figures are given as follows :—Two gold watches, 15 silver watches, scores of cheap time pieces, 32 gold-mounted greenstone brooches, 17 greenstone hearts, quite a multitude of other gold-mounted greenstone ornaments, two gold spectacle frames, one gold whistle, 30 gold rings, one silver matchbox, one pair silver-mounted greenstone carvers, xo gold lace pins, two pairs tusks, one electric belt, three sets of artificial teeth, 20 pawn tickets, a miner’s right, and a daily registration certificate.
