MOUTOA DRAINAGE.
To the Editor. Sir, —By some mischance your issue of Tuesday, 26th, containing a letter in which my name was mentioned, did not reach me, and I was therefore not aware that it had appeared until Saturday, when the letter was mentioned in the course of conversation. If you will allow me space, I should like to reply to one or two remarks made in this letter in reference to myself and my statements at the meeting held in Foxton about this drainage matter. Being particularly interested in a certain portion of the Moutoa estate drainage, I have on one or two occasions interviewed Messrs Easton and Stevens on the subject of drainage, and discussed the matter at considerable length with Mr Stevens about two months ago; in the course of this conversation I was informed that Mr Brackal had been interviewed by his firm, and, provided others interested would contribute a fair share, they would have levels taken and a large drain, put right through the estate. Since learning of the appearance of this letter I have interviewed several prominent men who are in a position to agree with me or to contradict my statements made at the meeting referred to, and in every case ray statements were not only entirely endorsed, but considerably enlarged on. As to my knowledge of the Moutoa estate swamp, I may say that I have lived alongside it all my lite, have travelled over it almost every hour of the day and night, and where, along the Kari Kari drain road, a companion and myself got our horses almost bogged on Monday week last, I used to ride full gallop to keep up to ray riding companion, who chose this as the best bit of road for a good gallop. Therefore, I think a guide unnecessary to myself, when on numerous occasions I have successfully acted as guide myself. In conclusion, as Messrs Stevens, Easton, and Austin have very kindly invited anyone inter--ested to inspect the drains on the Moutoa estate under the guidance of their Mr Easton, may I suggest that those interested accept the invitation, so that they may be in a better position to discuss the matter at the meeting on Tuesday next. —Yours etc., Waetkr S. Carter.
