THE ARBITRATION COURT’S AWARDS.
Not Based on Profits.
WEWjNGTon, June 27
At the sitting of the Arbitration Court tip-day, Mr Justice Sim had occasion to remark that the Court did not fix wages on a profitmaking basis. Under such a system men would have to go without wages if there were no profits. The Court should endeavonr,to give men fair remuneration for their work regardless of whether the employers got profit or not. Profit could only be taken into consideration in extreme cases where an increase in wages would wipe out business. The employers’ representative on the Bench remarked that frequently if the Court gave the men what they asked for the men would in consequence be walking the streets.
