FOOTBALL.
The football contributor to the Fielding Star contributes the following notes in our contemporary in respect to last Saturday’s rep. match,;—
“ The spectators, or at least some of them, knew more about football than the teams or the referee, particularly a member of the Foxton Management Committee, and were consequently more free in saying so. “ Taking the match as a whole, it was far below rep. form ; indeed it was not equal to a good club exhibition.
“The Foxton team proved a tough proposition, two Maoris especially playing a brilliant game right through. Their forwards were infinitely superior to Manawatu, while their full-back played a better game than Hughes. “ Momo, as centre, and Max Royal at five-eight, were the pick, while Shadbolt, Richardson and Hooker, gave an excellent exhibition.
“Taking them all round, I should say that the Foxton forwards displayed considerably more dash than the visitors. It was very apparent that they were out to play the spoiling game, for it was very, seldom they attempted to open out in anything like an organised attack. “ On the losing side, the bright particular star was Momo, one of last year’s Te Aute College team. His kicking, tackling, running, and passing were all good. He was well backed up by Mack Royal. The half-back was weak. One of the hardest worked men on the side was the full back, George, who got through a big afternoon’s work in good style. “ Forward, the most conspicuous man was Richardson, the wing forward. He played splendidly, and quite overshadowed Boon. Shadbolt was flashy. He evidently does not fancy the close work, but uses his pace to advantage in the open. “ Having seen Mack Royal perform, I simply marvel at the nerve of a certain club in making application to the Union for his transfer from Senior to Junior. There is no club in the Union that could say that, on Saturday’s form at least, be would not strengthen their backs.’ ;
The following |team will represent Albions in their match against RoUgotea, on Saturday ; Fullback, Bona; : Matt Royal, F. Robinson, J.
