SPORTING.

By Probable. - . • Racing at Hawke’s Bay last week was carried out under adverse weather conditions, the going being very holding, due to heavy rains which fell throughout the gathering. Nevertheless, totalisator receipts showed an increase on last year’s corresponding meeting. Irish had the misfortune to fall at the second fence, but it is problematical if he could have beat Eclair, who eventually won easily.

Young Billy Price had a good record at the meet —three mounts, three wins. His successes were : Pushful, White Lie and Greenleaf. The latter is a fairly good one, and now he is in a winning vein, h e may add more coin to Ted Collins’ account.

Generally, punters had a bad time, several dry bets failing, miserably. Hipporopla, Leno, Matakokiri (second day) and Martyrium cost punters no end of money. It is said there was a lot of boodle in parts of the colony for Black Reynard first day, but the nag never started, so where the coin came from is open to question. A tip for the near future, probably. No Shot was unlucky enough to jump off the course the second day when winning the steeples easily. This horse has vastly improved with age, and with ordinary luck should have no difficulty in annexing the first cross - country event he starts in.

On his showing Top Rose may win at Napier Park this week.

Hon Ormond’s team did not do very well at Hastings, but the Squire of Karimu may make amends at Napier, which meeting generally favours his representatives.

Iceland, Ladies’ Necklet winner, is a good sort that is likely to shine in big company next season. Loch Fyne’s name does not figure amongst the entrants for the Christchurch Steeples. Evidently something has gone amiss with this jumper, as good judges freely tipped him to have a big mortgage on the big Canterbury prize. , Eva’s jockey was apparently riding hard at the turn in the farewell event at Hastings, but the Champion Hack winner evidently took galloping into his nut again, as he finished an easy winner; past the post. . ■ . Pretty Maid paid a big price in the Hack Hurdles on Thursday, but I learn her party were not too sweet on her chance, and therefore did not participate greatly in the win.

Aqua Regia’s form the second day was in distinct contrast to her first day showing, hence the shrewd mob who followed her collected a £6 odd dividend.

There is still a face in Hutana, who fs liable to catch the judge’s eye in any company. Prospector’s party did a lot of silver at Hastings, but later on, perhaps he will be responsible .for a coup. He is hardly ready. '
