FIRE IN A COALMINE.

* Three men entombed. Invercargill, June 21. A serious fire broke out at six o’clock this morning in Nightcaps coal mine. Three men were cut off. Their names are William Duncan, William Carson, and Patrick Walsh. ' Duncan’s body has been recovered, and it is feared there is no hope of the recovery of the others alive. A rescue party was unable to enter the mine on account of the fire-damp. The managing director of the Nightscaps Company states that the mine manager is still in the mine conducting fire extinguishing and rescue operations, and full particulars have not yet reached him. The fire is raging near the outcrop. Duncan, who succumbed, was a deputy, and was much esteemed by the proprietary. The rescue parties are hampered by black damp.
