SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday night. Present: Messrs Clemett (chairman), Baker, Coley, Gray, Hennessy, Perreau, Wilson and Frankland (secretary). The Secretary reported that Mr T. Nye had reduced his account for asphalting cridket pitch by 9s. His generosity was appreciated by the Committee. Re proposed school gardens, Mr Hennessy reported that the sub-committee, of which he was a member, had come to the conclusion, after inspecting the locality, that there was not enough room, owing to the location of the cricket pitch, to set apart a regular garden in accordance with the proposal. After discussion, Mr Baker moved and Mr Wilson seconded, that the trees along Duncan St. be removed preparatory to forming a garden and that the Secretary be authorised to make arrangements for selling same, provided purchasers will clear away the rubbish. Carried, —It was decided to inforth the headmaster that the site chosen for the garden is from the south wall of the schoolhouse in a straight line to Park St., then along the Park St. fence to the cemetery, and along the cemetery fence to Duncan St. and alongside Duncan St. as far as the north wall of the schoolhouse. On the motion of Mr Coley it was decided to communicate with the Board in regard to the cess-pit pointing out that when first put in they made it too small. Mrs Knapp’s tender for school cleaning at 9s 6d per week was accepted. The Chairman reported the result of deputation to Council re calling public' meeting for the establishment of a technical school and it was decided that the Secretary write Mr Varney asking him when it would be convenient for him to come. A letter was read from Mr A. Feek, making certain complaints, and a dismission ensued re same. On the motion of Mr Gray it was decided to forward the letter to the headmaster for an explanation. Correspondence re proposed technical school was read. The headmaster reported that the average attendance for the past four weeks was as follows : 234, 224, 215 and 205, roll number 264 ; a supply of coal was urgently required ; Mr h. Wilson had kindly donated a load of kindling wood; other matters of minor importance were also mentioned. The. request for coal was left with the Secretary and Mi Hennessy to deal with. Mrs Ruback was granted an exemption. Accounts amounting to 10s 6d were passed for payment and the meeting rose.
