• ♦ Schooner Swamped. Twenty-eight persons drowned. New York, June n, The schooner La Jalouse, bound from Cayenne (French Guiana) to St. Lucia, one of the British Islands, was swamped and capsized off Barbados. Twenty-one persons succeeded in effecting a landing. Twentyeight passengers were drowned, including twelve women and children. London, June ix. The steel barque Serena, 1639 tons gross, bound from Melbourne to Queenstown, during a gale on March 18th had four of her crew swept overboard and drowned. The captain, at the risk of his life, was chiefly instrumental in rescuing two others who were holding on to a rope in icy water at the ship’s side. Melbourne, June 11. The steel barque Eagle Crag, 1450 tons gross, on her voyage from Liverpool narrowly escaped destruction by fire, which was started by a lamp being upset in the sail locker on April 13. The fire spread with alarming rapidity, but holes were cut in the deck, and the water poured in finally extinguished the flames.
