WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT.

The Chairman of the Borough Council Works Committee is to be complimented upon bringing down such a comprehensive report at, last night’s Council meeting. It has been the custom in the past for the overseer to present a monthly report. This is all very well in its way, but it is the duty of the Works Committee to lay out the work to be undertaken by the overseer—to set out his' duties for the current month. The Committee then know exactly what is going forward, and the Council are in touch with the expenditure of its funds on roads and footways. We feel sure ratepayers will appreciate the innovation, and that at next monthly meeting minor matters —matters of detail —will be touched upon. The report recommends : “That a footpath be formed on the south side of Union St. in front of the houses where the water lies, and a culvert be put in across the street to carry off storm water ; that the drain on the north side of Union St. be cleaned to Nye St., the earth taken out to be put on the footpath to fill up holes ; that the holes in the west end of Union St. to Mr . Withers’ house be filled in with Palmerston metal, and the balance of the street to No. 6 line to be crowned with from 2 to 3yds of metal to the chain at a cost of about £4O ; that £ls be spent on Baker and Howan Sts. in putting 3yds of metal to the chain ; that Duncan St. and Robinson St. from Park St. to Russell St. be metalled wdth 3yds of metal to the chain ; that Robinson St. from Park St. to Duncan St. be crowned with metal; that Futter St. and Coley St. be crowned with the road grader; that Cook St. be crowned with road grader and a little metal put in holes ; that Hall St. have a little blinding with metal; that the holes in Purcell St. be filled in. The Committee also inspected the Cemetery, and recommend that the row of pines along the road on the north side be cut down, the wattles spreading to be removed, and any young trees coming up on graves be taken out.” The report was adopted without discussion by the Council.
