A DUKE AS FIREMAN.

Nobleman Saves Lives of Three Women. More than a dozen persons were burned to death in Lisbon in a disastrous fire which burned out completely a five-storey lodging house near the central market, crowded with tenants. The Duke of Oparto, who worked with the firemen, saved three lives. The flames caught the lower portion of the building, and completely cut off the escape of the occupants of the upper floors. Nine children were burned, and a mother was killed in trying to rescue her infant. Many persons jumped into the street and were killed instantly. Two young girls jumped from the fifth floor, and one came down with such force that a lamp-post which broke her fall was smashed. The Duke displayed great courage in the work of rescue, and saved the lives of three women.
