Since then we have ascertained what he did say, and it was this ; ‘ ‘ Some people may not like new things introduced into the parish, but they were not to be offended with the church simply because they do not agree with the priest in charge. If any member of the congregation came to him and said ‘ I don’t like your way of doing things, and think they are too High Church, therefore I am going to leave the church,’ his answer would be, ‘lf that is all the love you have for the church, simply because your clergyman who is here to-day and gone tomorrow, does not quite fall in with your views, all he could say would be, perhaps you had better go.’ The church was a living body not depending on one man nor on one congregation, but world-wide. The congregation were to build it up in their own town, not only for themselves but for those who were to come after.”
